Gujarat Cancer Society

The Gujarat Cancer Society (GCS) was established in 1960 with a donation of ₹5000 as seed money collected from a charity cultural event organized by the Inner Wheel Club of Ahmedabad (Rotary Club). The will of the ladies’ members of the Inner Wheel Club to ameliorate the suffering and agony of patients with cancer crystallized into the formation of the Gujarat Cancer Society on 02 April 1961 under the presidentship of H E Shri Nawab Mehdi Nawaz Jung, Governor, and adopted the first constitution with first elected Governing Council on 27 Mar 1962.

With help from the Government, The M. P. Shah Cancer Hospital (Asarwa) was commissioned in the year 1965. Later, with a donation of £55000 from Shri M P Shah (a philanthropist from London), the support of Govt. of Gujarat and philanthropists of Gujarat jointly germinated the seed into M. P. Shah Cancer Hospital, which later metamorphosed into The Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI) in 1972.

The Gujarat Cancer Society became an active member along with the state authorities in spearheading cancer care activity in the State of Gujarat. Today, the Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute is full-fledged comprehensive cancer care and research Centre recognized by the Government of India Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as State Cancer Institute. For more than fifty years, The Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute have been leading the fight against the menace of cancer with an ultra-modern treatment arsenal, advanced research, preventive care, and intense community awareness.

What began as a thoughtful, socially responsible gesture in 1961 has today touched millions of lives, offering comprehensive cancer treatment and care. We are indebted to Late Shri Jitendra Mehta, Founder Secretary of Gujarat Cancer Society, for his selfless efforts in establishing a strong foundation for serving the needy from all walks of life. While the journey to date is certainly a milestone, it's the future and our mission to reduce the burden of the disease in the coming years which is more compelling.
